The folks at Kiwanis Care Centre were in a festive mood during a recent carnival.

The community care home hosted a carnival on Sept. 12, which featured fun-filled activities, a fortuneteller and food.

“We wanted to do something special for the residents,” said Carolyn Cattroni, an employee in the centre’s recreation department. “It’s open to staff, residents and family members. It is a celebration and something fun for them.”

Large red and white striped tents offered a festive feel to the facility. The event featured activities inside the facilities and outside on the patio.

“Everybody loved it,” Cattroni said. “It was like you were at a fair. We had music piped in. It was like you were at the midway.”

No midway is complete without games, and the carnival at Kiwanis Care Centre didn’t disappoint.

Denise Nardi, administrative assistance at Kiwanis Care Centre, said the games included balloon darts, spin art, a golf challenge, chuck-a-duck, tipsy plate, a fishpond and a carnival wheel.

“We had a cow-milking station,” she said. “It was a wooden cow with an udder. Milk-coloured water was coming out of it.”

The carnival also included some fair-favourite food items like cotton candy, popcorn and snow cones.

“Our kitchen staff created a hot dog cart. They served hot dogs and cake pops, chips and chocolate covered bananas,” Nardi said. “They served those all day to the residents and their families at no charge.”

Residents enjoyed the carnival so much that organizers anticipate that it won’t be the last fair at the centre.

“I think it’s going to become an annual event,” Nardi said.

“The reception we had not only from the residents, but the families and the grandchildren, was outstanding.”
