Watch out Chicken Legs, there’s a new player in town.

A new character joined young Royal City residents on the pitch at Queen’s Park this week for the New Westminster Police Department summer soccer school.

The annual camp has been bringing kids, aged five to 10 years old, and New Westminster police officers together since 1981. For five days, the kids are instructed in the basics of soccer while also being exposed to more police-related activities throughout the week. Activities include a demonstration from the RCMP K9 unit and a visit from the New Westminster Fire Department.

This year, participants also got a visit from G.I. Joe, a military officer trained in water gun combat.

G.I. Joe, also known as Const. Joe Wright, paid a visit to the kids on Tuesday, engaging in a friendly water fight, much to the delight of kids.

The camp runs until Friday and about 300 kids participate each year.
