Get reading for summer

Every year, the New Westminster Public Library encourages kids to keep up their reading by joining the summer reading program. By reading all summer, kids can win a medal and other prizes. This year's program is called Savour Each Word.

Summer is also when adults have more time to enjoy some extra reading, and we thought, why should kids have all the fun? So this year, the library is offering adults their own summer reading program.

A Taste for Reading (which complements the kids' Savour Each Word) runs until Aug. 13.

All you have to do is read as much as you want - wherever you want (beach, yacht, backyard, pool, plane) - and tell us your favourite book. We will enter your name in a draw for a prize. At the end of the summer, we'll let you know New Westminster's favourite books!

You can also enter the trivia contest for more chances to win. The trivia question changes each week. This week's question is: Greg Mortenson promised to build a school in a Pakistan village. Which book told his story?

Ballots for both the favourite book and the trivia contests are available in the library or online at www.nwpl.ca.

The draws for all prizes will take place on Saturday, Aug. 13. The library thanks local businesses for show-ing their own Taste for Reading by generously donating gifts for the prizes.

To feed your summer reading appetite, stop by the library. No matter what your taste, the library has books: bestsellers, mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, westerns, literature, biographies, non-fiction on a wide range of topics, as well as audiobooks and downloadable e-books you can transfer to an e-reader, smartphone or tablet. If you need suggestions, ask a librarian. Not only can we tell you some of our favourite books, but we can suggest other authors, if you've read everything from your own favourites.
