John Ashdown invites community members to attend the Eagles, Aerie #20 New Westminster's weekly meat draw, which raises funds for the group's charitable endeavours.

The Eagles host a fund-raising meat draw every Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and every Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Fireside Pub, 421 East Columbia St.

The Eagles are grateful to Thrifty Foods for its "generous participation" in the meat draws.

Taking the lead

A New Westminster resident is taking the helm of the B.C. Care Providers Association.

Daniel Fontaine has been appointed as the association's new chief executive officer, taking over from Ed Helfrich who retired after 27 years with the association.

"I am pleased to be taking over the helm of the association after it has been ably led by Ed for so many years," Fontaine said in a press release. "I hope to build on his success and ensure the B.C. Care Providers Association remains the industry's voice to government and the public."

The association serves the private and non-profit care providers.

Its members care for more than 10,000 seniors daily in residential care and 4,000 annually through home support.

"We are excited to have Daniel joining our team and we know he will be able to provide the kind of leadership we need to advocate for excellence in seniors' care throughout British Columbia," said association president Mary McDougall in a press release.

Fontaine served four years as chief public affairs officer at Mitacs, a not-for-profit organization based at the University of British Columbia.

His background includes work as the communications director for the Western Brewers Association and chief of staff to a former mayor of Vancouver.

Royal City residents may have caught Fontaine on the airwaves over the Christmas season, when he filled in as the afternoon host on the Simi Sara show on CKNW.
