Fun and festivities all Canada Day long

Looking for something to do on Canada Day? The Royal City has just the thing to celebrate the nation's 146th birthday. The City of New Westminster and the Arts Commission are hosting an all-day affair, Queen's Park by Day and the Riverfront by Night.

QUEEN'S PARK BY DAY

Queen's Park by Day features fun activities for the whole family, including roving entertainers, interactive community displays and delicious maple crème cookies.

The events run rain or shine from 11: 30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. and are free for everyone.

ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULE:

11: 30 a.m. to 12: 15 p.m. Bloco Energia Bloco Energia, a 12-person Brazilian percussion ensemble.

12: 15 to 1: 15 p.m. Formal ceremony and Pick-A-Box Auction, bid on a mystery box filled with gifts, organizers say no matter which box you pick, you'll love it.

1: 15 to 2: 15 p.m. Charlotte Diamond and the Hug Bug Band, a concert that will certainly entertain all-ages. With Charlotte. and her band, you can expect a 24-carat show.

2: 15 to 3: 15 p.m. Blue Meenies, back by popular demand, this year the Meenies cap off the Canada Day entertainment at Queen's Park with their brand of fun hits from the '40s to the '90s.

All concerts are held at the Queen's Park Bandshell.

RIVERFRONT BY NIGHT

After spending the day celebrating Canada in Queen's Park, head down to the River Market for the kick-off of the Concerts on the Quay series, presented by Hyack Festival Association and the River Market.

There will be four live performances by musicians from the Lower Mainland starting at 5 p.m. and running until 10 p.m. This year's headliner is Vancouver Island musician Wil, best known for his song Roam, the anthem to Travel Alberta's media campaign, Remember to Breathe.

All concerts will be held on the Thrifty's stage between the Fraser River Discovery Centre and River Market at the Quay.

Admission to Concerts on the Quay is free and the evening-long event will end with a fireworks display over the Fraser River.

Future concerts are also planned for Saturday, July 13 and Saturday, Aug. 3. For more information regarding Concerts on the Quay, visit hyack.bc.ca.

5 p.m. Rich Hope 6 p.m. Big World Band 7 p.m. Dominique Fricot 8: 00 p.m. Wil 10: 00 p.m. Fireworks over the Fraser River.

HIGHLIGHTS

Queen's Park: Maple crème cookies and other treats at the park on Canada Day from 11: 30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m., as well as entertainment, including a Brazilian percussion ensemble Pick-A-Box auction, Charlotte Diamond and the Hug a Bug Band, and the Blue Meenies.

Riverfront: Concerts on the Quay at River Market from 5 to 10 p.m., starting with Rich Hope, then at 6 p.m. the Big World Band, at 7 p.m. Dominique Fricot, and at 8 p.m. Wil. There will also be fireworks at 10 p.m.
