October is photography month at the New Westminster Public Library.

At the monthly travel shows, Eunice Hodge will show the photographs of her trip to Southern Africa covering from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The travel shows, which have been offered since 1972, are sponsored by the University Women's Club and presented by volunteers who willingly share their travel photographs and experiences.

On Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m., local photographer Tamara Sale will show some of her striking nature photographs and talk about her work.  Tamara is a cinematographer/photographer whose awards include a Genie for a theatrical short.  Recently, her spare time has been devoted to nature photography, and she is producing a series of books entitled Nature Caught My Eye. Her most recent book is The Birds at Piper Spit. Her work is also displayed on the Ramp Gallery until the end of October.

Later in the month, the library is offering a workshop on Creative Uses of Photos at the Tech Tutorial on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Taking photos is so easy with digital technology, but then what? The workshop shows how to get your photos off your camera and out of your computer file and how to do something creative with them. Computer photo sharing, social media, digital photobooks and personalized calendars are just some of the ideas.

Register for Tamara Sale and Creative Use of Photos at 604-527-4667 or [email protected].

The library also has a wealth of books and DVDs for both beginning and more experienced photographers who want to know more about their craft.

Start with Easy Digital Cameras, by Mark Soper, or the Fundamentals of Photography DVD series.

The Complete Photo Manual has more than 300 detailed tips for creating a better photograph.

If you want to follow Tamara's lead, there are several books on wildlife photography. Try Digital Nature Photography Closeup, by Jon Cox, or Bill Coster's Creative Bird Photography.
