Westminster House is inviting Royal City residents to attend its first Community Day.
Community Day is a spinoff event to the Clean Up New West initiative that Westminster House launched in 2009. The new event aims to raise funds for Westminster House, while giving people a chance to have fun, win prizes, and pick up garbage and explore the community with family and friends.
Based in New Westminster, Westminster House is a centre for women who are recovering from addictions. Women come from around the Lower Mainland and the province to access the recovery program.
Community Day will be held in Hyack Square on Saturday, Sept. 29. It will feature a scavenger hunt around the city, food eating contests, a raffle for a Vespa scooter, and children's activities including a colouring contest, face painting and skipping.
Organizers note that colouring contest entries from children up to 12 years of age will be displayed in River Market. The contest's winner will receive a Toys 'R' Us gift certificate.
Registration for the scavenger hunt begins at 10 a.m. and the hunt gets underway at 11 a.m. Using clues given to them at registration, participant will go around the city and collect stamps along the way. All participants will receive a complimentary lunch from Chronic Tacos and the grand prize winner will receive $500.

CASINO COMES THROUGH
The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society is thrilled with the support it's received from Starlight Casino.
"The casino hosted a staff appreciation day for their own staff. We showed up with our barbecue. They supplied everything else," said firefighter Glen Bailey, president of the charitable society. "It was a real fun event."
New Westminster firefighters arranged for some musical entertainment from a youth band and brought a dunk tank they'd borrowed from their colleagues in the Burnaby Fire Department.
"They had some silent auction stuff. Everything they raised went to the charitable society," Bailey said. "We were there for seven hours barbecuing. They have donated just a shade over $5,100 to the charitable society. It is an awesome contribution."
