Eat, garden, and be merry

A culinary tradition in the Royal City, entertainment options, a gardening workshop and a children's event are among the offerings taking place in New Westminster this weekend.

A culinary tradition in the Royal City, entertainment options, a gardening workshop and a children's event are among the offerings taking place in New Westminster this weekend. We're continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for the April 26 to 28 weekend.

1 Take a night off from cooking and enjoy a home-cooked Ukrainian perogy supper at Holy Eucharist Church hall, 501 Fourth Ave. (at the corner of Fourth Avenue and Fifth Street). Perogies, cabbage rolls and other delicious items are served from 5 to 8 p.m. and you can eat in the hall or take them home. The church also offers its monthly perogy sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 604-5260988 or 604-522-7711.

2 Treat yourself to some lovely music and tasty treats at the Bells and Cream Tea that's taking place on Saturday, April 27 at Queens Avenue United Church, 529 Queens Ave. The tea features an adult and youth handbell choir in concert while you enjoy scones, jam, Devonshire cream and tea in bone china teacups. Tickets must be bought in advance so get them today by calling 604-522-1606. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students and $15 for children.

3 Support KidSport New West and have fun at the same time. If you drop by Mercer Stadium on Saturday, April 27 between 8: 30 a.m. and 4: 30 p.m., you can donate your used sports equipment (of any kind) to KidSport New West, enjoy a complimentary coffee, play a game of Ultimate Frisbee - or watch a game if that's your preference. Drop-in games will take place at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Thrifty Foods will be serving up a barbecue lunch from 11: 30 a.m. to 4 p.m. KidSport raises funds so it can help local kids participate in organized sports when money may be an obstacle to getting involved.

4 Enjoy a free Celebration of Spring event that features all sorts of kid-friendly activities including animal mask-making, gardening, face painting, a pirate ship bouncy castle and a performance by children's entertainer, Zox of the Forest. The event, sponsored by the New Westminster Early and Middle Childhood Development committee, takes place on Sunday, April 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Centennial Community Centre, 665 East Sixth Ave. Free resource bags will be available for families who register to attend. Register at info@ kidsnewwest.ca.

5 Learn how to maintain your garden and lawn organically at the smart (organic) gardening workshop. The City of New Westminster is holding the workshop that features a presentation by Catherine Dale, a certified organic gardener and educator. Guests are invited to bring a pen and paper - and questions - to the workshop that's being held Sunday, April 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Centennial Community Centre. The workshop is free, but people are asked to register in advance at 604-527-4592.
