This month's Super Saturdays at Discovery Centre is focusing on foods from the Fraser River - including fish and food from farms.

Food of the Fraser is the focus of this month’s Super Saturday’s fun at Fraser River Discovery Centre.

How does the Mighty Fraser make food possible? That’s a question that will be explored at on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Fraser River Discovery Centre – where the focus will be on the different kinds of foods from the Fraser River.

“The Fraser Valley basin is full of fertile farms and fabulous foods, many of which we have the Fraser River to thank for,” said Stephen Bruyneel, director, external relations and development at the New West-based centre. “Families are invited to join us on Aug. 26 to learn about some of them as part of our next Super Saturdays.”

Super Saturdays is a regular series of public programs that celebrate the living, working Fraser River at the Fraser River Discovery Centre. It takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr.

At this month’s event, FRDC staff will be on hand to help guests learn about these foods, with a focus on such topics as: learning about nutrients carried by the Fraser’s current (by taking part in a bowling activity); mapping the bounty of foods to that come out of the Fraser Valley; and exploring one of many First Nation fish-preservation methods with a guided demonstration (drawing from information found in the Our Bones are Made of Salmon exhibit, created in partnership with Musqueam Elder Larry Grant and Stó:lō Cultural Advisor Dr. Sonny McHalsie).

“Families with children of all ages are welcome to this event,” added Bruyneel. “And there is no need to pre-register.”

Fraser River Discovery Centre provides a variety of programs and exhibits related to the Fraser River.

Super Saturdays is included in admission to Discovery Centre: family ticket ($15) for two adults and up to four children; adult ticket ($6) for folks aged 19 and older; seniors 65 and older and students (with student ID) tickets ($5); child ticket ($3) for kids aged three to 12; and free for children two and under.
