Queensborough Bike Rodeo
Weekend fun: Trevor Lakey, a recreation leader at Queensborough Community Centre, is organizing a bike rodeo. The May 10 event is one of our Top Five weekend ideas.

Bike riders of all ages can saddle up for the first annual Queensborough Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May 10 at the Queensborough Community Centre.

There will be safety instruction, bike decorating, a "tricked-out" tricycle race and six skill testing obstacle stations. For the competitive cyclist, a scorecard certificate will be handed out after the obstacle course.

If the old bike is a little worse for wear, Cap's Bicycle Shop employees will lead a bike maintenance station to show riders how to set up their bikes.

The whole bike rodeo idea came from a grassroots community initiative.

"Some of the parents from the school and from the community and in the Queensborough area came to us and said it would be cool to have some sort of bike safety type rodeo where we could have fun riding around and do a tour of the community and kids could meet their neighbours and learn bike safety and bike skills," said Trevor Lakey, event organizer and recreation leader at the community centre.

The rodeo will kick off at 1pm with a heart-stopping show by Trial Stars trick riders and the day will wrap up with a cycle through area trails led by guides from Fraser River Bike Tours.

Riders need only bring their bike and a helmet.

Lakey said organizers are hoping for 50 to 100 participants and expect the event to get larger every year.

The rodeo will go rain or shine. Registration is $5 before the event and $8 on rodeo day and includes a barbecue lunch. For more information call, 604-525-7388.
