MEAT DRAW

Members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #20 are inviting community members to join them in celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

The group's longstanding history in New Westminster dates back to May 1899. For many years it's theme has been People Helping People, a tradition that continues to this day.

The Eagles hold weekly meat draws to raise funds for community projects.

The meat draws are held on Fridays (5 to 7 p.m.) and Saturdays (3 to 5 p.m.) at the Fireside Pub at 420 East Columbia St. in Sapperton.

"The Eagles will be holding a special meat draw Saturday, March 16th in celebration of St Patrick's Day (on) the 17th," said an email from club member John Ashdown. "They are 'lambing it up' with lamb roasts and a gift basket to containing all of the ingredients to make a family lamb stew, including the Guinness."

The Eagles are also selling raffle tickets for a five-course cedar plank salmon dinner for six that will be held May 18. The raffle is raising funds for Honour House, Royal Columbian Hospital and the B.C. Cancer Society.

Tickets are $2 and are available in books of 11, which contains a free ticket and a chance to win a seller's prize of $100. Call John Ashdown at 604-657-5600 for tickets.

The Eagles welcome new members. Anyone interested in volunteering with the service club can contact Gerry Lui at 778861-7388.

SIGN UP TO VOTE

If you're not on the provincial voters' list, there's still time to sign up in New Westminster.

Royal City residents who are unsure whether they're registered, or know they aren't on the voters' list, have a couple of opportunities to register in the coming weeks. People can attend the Queensborough Community Centre (920 Ewen Ave.) March 16 to 19 and Royal Square Mall (800 McBride Blvd) March 22 and 23.

The provincial election is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14. For more information, visit www.elections. bc.ca.

COMMUNITY GRANT

The deadline is fast approaching for residents wanting to make their dreams come true for their neighbourhood.

Community members are able to submit applications to the neighbourhood small grants program until March 31.

Projects funded in the past include community gardens, canning workshops, intergenerational storytelling projects, street parties and book exchanges.

Family Services of Greater Vancouver coordinates the program in New Westminster, with funds being supplied by the Vancouver Foundation. Grants range from $50 to $500.

For more information about the grant program, visit www.fsgv.ca or contact program coordinator Maylen Crespo at [email protected] or 604-525-9144 extension 3667.

ERADICATING POLIO

The Rotary Club of New Westminster is doing its part to help eradicate polio.

Jeremy Perry, the incoming director of public relations for the Rotary Club of New Westminster, is pleased the federal government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation both agreed to match donations made toward the cause up until March 1, as it meant $3 for every $1 donation was helping in the fight against polio.

"When Rotarians took up the fight against polio, there were 125 countries that were endemic with polio," he said. "That was in the '80s. Today there are three. We are so close to eradicating polio from the Earth."
