The dance continues: Royal Lancers and girls in the 2014 and 2015 May Queen suites danced the quadrille dances at the inaugural community heritage picnic held in 2015 at the Armoury.

More than 200 people are expected to attend this weekend’s May Day Community Heritage Picnic.

The fourth annual event is being held on Sunday, May 27 from 2 to 4 pm. at The Armoury of The Royal Westminster Regiment.
“We already have over 200 people, registered,” said Karen Baker MacGrotty, who is co-chairing the event with her husband David MacGrotty. “Both 2017 and 2018 Royal Suites will also be participating, along with their family and community members.”

Community members are invited to pack a picnic lunch and celebrate spring and New Westminster traditions at the event that’s presented by the Hyack Festival Association. The event includes traditional dances by the Royal Lancers and members of the Royal Suites.

Local citizens launched the community picnic four years ago, after the city eliminated the Royal Lancers dances from the city’s May Day banquet. The dances between the Royal Lancers, which is comprised of local men, and members of the Royal Suite had been part of local May Day festivities for decades.

Admission to the picnic is free, but people must pre-register. For tickets and information, go to Eventbrite.ca and search for New Westminster May Day Community Heritage Picnic 2018.
