Initiative for Neuroscience and Dementia, Iva Demirova
New Westminster Secondary Grade 10 student Iva Demirova shares some thoughts at a dementia-awareness event. This fall, Demirova founded the NWSS Initiative for Neuroscience and Dementia, a club that hosted a "Communi-Tea for Dementia Awareness" at the school this month.

Residents are invited to join students and city staff as they come together to discuss dementia and mental health issues at a community event this weekend.

Students with New Westminster Secondary School’s Initiative for Neuroscience and Dementia club have organized the second annual Communi-Tea, and it’s scheduled for this Saturday from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. at Century House, 620 Eighth St.

The event, spearheaded by Grade 11 student Iva Demirova, brings together people of different generations to raise awareness about dementia and mental health. The theme of this year’s event is “Coming Together,” and will cover topics such as dementia and mental health awareness across generations; how to end stigma; connecting with your community; and how to help make New West a dementia- and mental-health-friendly city.

Representatives from the Alzheimer Society of B.C., mental health survivors, city planners and community members are expected to speak at the event. Residents who attend the event will also have an opportunity to share their thoughts.

Entrance to the event is by donation. Tea and snacks will be served.
