Class Act: NWSS students hold dry grad fundraisers

A combo of summer-like weather and some dedicated Grade 12 students helped bring in more than $2,000 for the upcoming dry grad party.

A combo of summer-like weather and some dedicated Grade 12 students helped bring in more than $2,000 for the upcoming dry grad party.

New Westminster Secondary students and parents hosted a test drive and car wash fundraiser at the high school on Sunday to raise money for the alcohol-free grad party in June. Key West Ford partnered with the dry grad committee to host the Drive 4UR School event, which donated $20 to the grad event for every test drive taken.

“The two Mustangs were very popular and the pick-up truck, of course,” said Lori Jenvey, a parent and member of the committee. “That Shelby was fun to drive, let me tell you.”

In total, Key West Ford donated $1,700 to the committee, and an additional $700 was raised through a car wash organized by students, Jenvey said

If you missed Sunday’s event, there’s still time to show your support for the 2016 NWSS grads. Right now, parents are selling raffle tickets to raise funds for dry grad. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20, and you could win $1,000, $500 or $250.

Tickets are available for purchase from any grad parent or from Jenvey at [email protected].

Oh, and the dry grad committee is still looking for about 10 to 20 people to volunteer at the event on Wednesday, June 29. It takes place at the Queensborough Community Centre from, 9:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. If you’re interested, contact Jenvey at the email above.

Douglas College gets a new biz director

Douglas College hopes its newest team member will help forge strong bonds with the community at-large.

The college announced last week it had brought Catherine Williams on board as the school’s new director of business development. Business development is nothing new to Williams, who has worked for both UBC’s Sauder School of Business and SFU’s Beedie School of Business.

She is also the founder of Ideastream Consulting and president of Parallel Vancouver.

“(Williams) will help Douglas stay on track with being recognized as providing the most inspiring and relevant undergraduate experience in B.C.,” said Douglas president Kathy Denton, in a press release. “With her guidance, we will continue to build those strong community ties that provide unique experiences to our students to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom.”
