Don’t forget to head over to Mercer Stadium this Friday for the Hyacks annual homecoming celebrations.
This year’s festivities get underway at 4 p.m. with the alumni flag football game, followed by the pre-game party at 5 p.m. featuring a family fun zone. At 6 p.m. is the alumni reception with refreshments, a prize draw, fireworks, tug-of-war, the NWSS band and skydivers.
The Hyacks’ varsity team hits the field at 7:30 p.m. to face off against the Carson Graham Eagles. This is the team’s first regular game of the season, so be sure to get out and cheer on the hometown boys.
College students benefit from big donation
There will be an additional $9,000 up for grabs for students planning to attend Douglas College in fall of 2017.
The college recently established the Joyce Family Foundation First-Year Student Bursary after the foundation, created by Canadian entrepreneur Ron Joyce – best known for being Tim Horton’s business partner and guiding the doughnut shop to success – donated $250,000 to the local post-secondary institution, according to a press release.
There will be three bursaries, worth $3,000 each, up for grabs in hopes of breaking down barriers for first-year students hoping to enroll in full-time programs.
“We wanted to make sure high school graduates were able to attend Douglas College regardless of their financial situation,” said Hazel Postma, associate vice president of advancement and alumni relations. “We are extremely grateful to the Joyce Family Foundation and its trustees for this generous gift and opportunity they have provided to the youth in our community.”
