For the students: Mayor Jonathan Cote with Hazel Postma, Douglas College’s associate vice-president advancement and alumni relations, and firefighters Trevor Lakey, Eric Picher, David Noma, Kyle Hlina, Shane Poole and Christie Bruce. The firefighters’ charitable society donated $1,000 to the college recently.

More money will be available for New West residents hoping to attend Douglas College.

The New Westminster Firefighters’ Charitable Society has merged its Douglas College endowment fund with the City of New Westminster’s 150th anniversary fund, bringing the combined total to more than $32,000. The funds are available to students who reside in New Westminster and need help paying for tuition and books while attending Douglas College.

Since 2002, the firefighters’ charitable society has helped more than a dozen students attend the local college.

The society recently donated another $1,000 to mark the merging of its endowment funds with those of the city.

It’s official

The New Westminster school district finally has the keys to its newest facility – Fraser River Middle School.

While the district was hoping to get access to the new school last week, school trustee Kelly Slade-Kerr announced on Twitter Monday night that the occupancy permit had been issued. School staff and teachers are expected to move in to their new digs next week, and students will get a chance to check out the new school on Sept. 6.

Kudos

Congrats go out to five New Westminster students who passed the national exam required to become chartered professional accountants.

Kevin Lee, Sarah Lilley, Geoffrey Mooney, Jonathan Pavich and Renata Yulgusheva were among the 158 CPA students across the province who conquered the multi-day common final examination needed to get certification. Way to go!

New courses offered

Students heading to Douglas College this September will have more courses to choose from, according to the local post-secondary institution.

For students interested in a career in mining and mining exploration, there is a new geological resources diploma. Many courses offered as part of the program are transferable so students can move on to university once the diploma is complete, noted a press release.

Meanwhile, students in the college’s social work program can now complete a social work degree without having to transfer to a university. Douglas College announced earlier this month it had received approval to offer a social work degree program.

“The bachelor’s degree is the entry level for many careers in the profession,” said Carla Alexandra, community social service work program coordinator. “We had a good number of our students who had a relationship with their instructors and wanted to stay. Now they can.”
