City to host economic forum

November event will look at future city development

New Westminster is preparing to sell itself as a city on the rise.

The City of New Westminster and the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to provide an economic development forum on Nov. 8.

"The event is really about telling the story about the new New West," said Mitchell Edgar, the city's manager of economic development.

According to Edgar, the forum will address the significant investments that have been made in the city in recent years and the revitalization that's under-way. It's expected that more than 250 business leaders, developers and professionals will attend.

"I think it's going to be a great event," Edgar recently told city council. "Judging from the interest we have had so far, I think we are going to have great attendance."

Bob Rennie, principal with Rennie Marketing Systems, is the event's keynote speaker. Other presenters include: Andrew Ramlo (director of the Urban Futures Institute); Dr. Nigel Murray (CEO of the Fraser Health Authority); Gino Nonni (president of Wesgroup Properties which is developing the Brewery District in Sapperton); Scott McAlpine (president of Douglas College); and Lisa Spitale (the city's director of development services).

Coun. Bill Harper believes the forum will be a "really big day" for New Westminster as it will bring high-profile people into the city.

Tickets for the economic development forum are $175 plus tax. The Nov. 8 forum at La Perla Ballroom will run from 8: 30 a.m. to 1: 30 p.m.

"Once the economic powerhouse of the Lower Mainland, New Westminster is undergoing revitalization and resurgence. New infrastructure and amenities are laying the groundwork for growth and new businesses are being established to serve the needs of the city's expanding population," states the investnewwest.ca website. "The New Westminster economic forum will showcase why New West is a key destination for those seeking future investment, expansion and location prospects."
