IN HONOUR

Former MP Chuck Strahl is the new honorary lieutenant-colonel of the Royal Westminster Regiment.

The Minister of National Defence has appointed the Chilliwack resident for a three-year term as the regiment's honorary lieutenant-colonel. He will serve along with Col. Karen Baker-MacGrotty, the regiment's honorary colonel.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be asked to serve in an honorary capacity with the Royal Westminster Regiment," Strahl said in a press release. "These men and women deserve our full support, and I look forward to helping them connect with the communities and people throughout our district."

Baker-MacGrotty said Strahl will work to make sure the strong bonds that unite the regiment and the various communities are made even stronger.

"Our soldiers' unselfish service and personal sacrifice often go unnoticed, and through liaison with the community, we hope to build stronger links and raise awareness," she said in a press release. "This is especially important at this time as members of the regiment have returned from active service in Afghanistan and Sudan. They are reuniting with their families and transitioning back into the workforce."

According to Baker-MacGrotty, Strahl will act as an ambassador - making local businesses, government and community leaders aware of the role that the regiment, the reserves and the Canadian Forces play in civic and national affairs.

"Mr. Strahl is an excellent choice as honorary lieutenant-colonel," stated Lt.-Col. Doug Poitras, commanding officer of the Royal Westminster Regiment. "He is a respected leader in not only his own community but also nationwide. Our honorary colonel team of Baker-MacGrotty and Strahl will be a powerful combination for our regiment to build relationships across the various communities in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley."

Strahl was elected to Parliament in six consecutive federal elections, serving from 1993 until his retirement in 2011.

GET ON THE ICE

If you've been missing hockey because of the NHL lockout - or you're just looking for a fun night out - an upcoming fundraiser is just what you need.

The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society will be hosting the seventh Hydrant Cup on Friday, Nov. 30 at Queen's Park Arena. The biannual hockey game will see New Westminster firefighters face off against Canucks Alumni.

Tickets are $10 for a family of four (two adults and two children) or $5 for an individual. Proceeds from the event will go to the charitable society (which funds numerous local organizations and projects) and the Queen's Park Care Centre.

Past players in the Hydrant Cup have included Bill Ranford, Kirk McLean, Cliff Ronning, Jyrki Lumme and Gary Nyland. In addition to the action on the ice, the event includes an outdoor barbecue, a Frisbee toss, music by the New Westminster Secondary School jazz band, a visit from Sparky the fire dog and Fin the Canucks mascot and raffle and door prizes. Tickets are available at the Glenbrook fire hall or Queen's Park Arena.
