Century House is kicking off a number of programs aimed at getting seniors active.
ActivAge is a new program for seniors aged 65 and older who are wanting to get more physically active. Class sizes are small in this program, which promises to be fun and social and get seniors moving. Two options are available for participants:
* Option 1: Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon from April 11 to June 27. Registration fee $40 (code 156515.)
* Option 2: Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon from April 13 to July 6. Registration fee is $40 (code 156516.)
Choose to Move is a six-month motivation and support program to help seniors aged 60 and older set and meet physical activity goals. Participants work one-on-one with an activity coach to develop a personal plan that fits with their preferences and lifestyle.
“What Choose to Move does differently is works individually with participants to find what exercise works for them and then an activity coach supports them to achieve their goals,” said Shelly Schnee, recreation programmer at Century House.
Choose to Move, which runs from April to September, includes private consultation with a certified activity coach, four group meetings for encouragement and motivation and regular check-ins with an activity coach at which time participants will discuss how their goals are progressing and any challenges. It’s being offered through the B.C. Recreation and Parks Association and the YMCA of Greater Vancouver, with the support and coordination of the Active Aging Research Team at UBC’s Centre for Hip Health and Mobility.
“One reason why this program seems to work is that participants are choosing the activities,” said Amanda Fraser, one of the researchers who is monitoring the pilot across B.C. and evaluating its outcomes. “We know that when people can choose, they tend to focus on interests and choose activities that fit within their budgets.”
The program costs $40. Register at 604-519-1066 (registration code 157827).
