Century House has lots on offer for New West seniors this fall

Fall is a great time to make a fresh start and try something new, and New West seniors don’t have far to go to get some inspiration as Century House has a classes and programs getting underway in September.

Whether you want to get active, improve your health or be creative, you’re bound to find a class that fits the bill.

On the health front, a free workshop on Diabetes Self-Management runs on Saturdays from Sept. 17 to Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop is aimed at providing strategies and tools to help people manage diabetes and related symptoms  so they have enhanced daily activities and a better quality of life.

Seniors will learn how to cook nutritious and tasty meals in the Food Skills for Seniors program, which runs from Sept. 26 to Nov. 7 on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. This program, which costs $15, gives seniors a chance to prepare and cook easy meals that are low in sugar, fat and salt – but are full of flavour and are healthy.

If your goal is to get more active this fall, Century House has numerous classes for your consideration, with many getting underway in September.

Dance Exercise ‘at la barre’ (Sept. 15 to Oct. 20); the ABC’s of the Exercise Room (Sept. 27 to Oct. 18); Get Up and Go! (Sept. 21 to Nov. 25); Stretching and Relaxation (Sept. 12 to Oct. 3); Zumba Gold (Sept. 10 to 24); Hatha Yoga (Sept. 27 to Nov. 29); Yoga (Sept. 27 to Dec. 6); and Tai Chi – Beginners (Sept. 20 to Nov. 22) are among the offerings getting started next month.

ActivAge, a class for folks aged 60 and up, is for inactive older adults who need to be reintroduced to the value of physical activity and to reinforce a commitment for daily life. This program is offered on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to noon (Sept. 20 to Dec. 6) and on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon (Sept. 22 to Dec. 8); the program is free, but registration is required.

If you’re looking to get a little creative, Century House offers a wide range of programs where you can enhance your creativity, whether its’s doing pottery, painting in acrylics, discovering some of the various mediums for pencil crayons or learning the basics of drawing. A range of programs for beginners to intermediates are available for people interested in watercolours.

Feeling musical? Beginning, intermediate and advanced ukulele classes will be running from Sept. 24 to Nov. 26 at Century House.
Seniors wanting to learn a bit more, can register for a keyboarding class (to help them out on the computer) and basic digital photography.
