A number of events are taking place in the Royal City in celebration of Family Literacy Week.

Family Literacy Week is celebrated each year on Jan. 27.

Literacy Now New Westminster has been working with organizations to develop New Westminster Reads events and activities for families - in the home, in the workplace and in the community.

New Westminster Public Library is inviting families to drop by the library on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. to enjoy storytelling and have an informal chat with a librarian who can offer tips on family reading activities and improving reading skills.

The event will also include displays, giveaways and snacks.

The library is located at 716 Sixth Ave.

On Jan. 26, the Lower Mainland Purpose Society held literacy activities.

Several local organizations - including Family Services of Greater Vancouver, Immigrant Services Society of B.C., the New Westminster School District and New Westminster Parks, Culture and Recreation, are participating in New Westminster Reads - by incorporating literacy activities into their programs.

Literacy Now New Westminster is a group of organizations and individuals who are working to increase literacy and access to literacy services for local residents and families.

Initiatives by local groups include New Westminster Family Book Shares, which are informal borrowing collection of books at places where people unlikely to use more traditional sources of reading gather.

Examples include the Hospitality Project in conjunction with the Sixth Avenue United Church and New Westminster Food Bank, the Elizabeth Fry Centre and new locations at Olivet Baptist Church ad Centennial Community Centre.
