Fraser River Discovery Centre is giving folks a chance to “celebrate the strange family dynamics of the animal kingdom” – just in time for Family Day.

In celebration of this year’s Family Day long weekend, the centre will focus on animal family dynamics all weekend long with its Celebrate the Strange activities.

“There are many ways to be a family, and no two are alike,” FRDC executive director Karen Lee said in a press release. “On this year’s Family Day, we will showcase the many differences of animal families. With a mix of facilitated and self-guided activities throughout the weekend, there’s sure to be something for everyone.”

The centre, located at 788 Quayside Dr. on New Westminster’s waterfront, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. all long weekend. Through self-guided activities, visitors will be able to “negotiate like a barn owl chick or keep all of the fox kits fed” at self-guided stations set up around the building.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy some facilitated activities at Fraser River Discovery Centre this weekend, including:

  • 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Egg exchangers: Guests will navigate the centre like a brown-headed cowbird in search of a nest, and discover their unique approach to laying eggs while on the move.
  • 12 to 2 p.m. – Storytime: Visitors will listen to Bird Boy by Matthew Burgess, with a craft to follow.
  • 2 to 4 p.m. – How Do We Know? Attendees can practise their observational skills as they investigate some of the many ways people we learn about animal behaviour.
  •

“Regular admission fees will apply on Saturday and Sunday, and admission will be free on Monday,” Lee said. “We look forward to welcoming visitors this Family Day long weekend.”

Fraser River Discovery Centre opened on New Westminster’s waterfront in 1999. The centre provides a variety of exhibits and programming related to different aspects of the Fraser River, including industry and environment.
