BC seniors advocate Isobel, shown here in a previous visit to New West, returns to Century House on Thursday, Jan. 25.

Canada’s first senior advocate will be sharing her thoughts on seniors’ issues and fielding questions at this week’s Time for Change event in New West.

Isobel Mackenzie, who has served as B.C.’s seniors advocate since March 2014, is returning to Century House to share her insights with local residents. The Time for Change: Seniors Have Voices event is on Thursday, Jan. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Century House.

“Isobel has been a fierce advocate for seniors and their families, and her insight and commitment has led to recommendations that have created real and lasting change,” said a notice about the event. “Isobel will be using her extensive professional experience in home care, licensed care, community services and volunteer services to outline her vision as to how to become a successful advocate.”

When she was named as B.C.’s first seniors advocate nearly a decade ago, Mackenzie also became Canada’s first seniors advocate.

Thursday’s event begins at 2 p.m. with a welcome, land acknowledgement and a brief history of The Time for Change initiative at Century House. Mackenzie will do a presentation at 2:30 p.m. and take part in a Q&A session from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

The Time to Change group at Century House invites community members to attend what it is sure will be an “interesting and inspiring” afternoon.

The event is a free but attendees are asked to register in advance at the Century House front desk or at 604-519-1066.

The Time for Change/Seniors Have Voices group is presenting an ongoing series of speakers and workshops focused on how seniors can advocate for change on issues that affect their daily lives – which could include everything from health care, aging in place, housing, transportation and living on a fixed-income.

A joint partnership between the City of New Westminster and Century House, Seniors Have Voices held its inaugural event in October 2023.
