The City of Richmond has earned a national title while beating hundreds of communities across Canada.

Richmond was named Canada's Most Active Community in the national 2025 ParticipACTION Community Challenge, and has won $100,000 to support physical activity and sport initiatives for residents.

This is the first time the city has won the national title. It was previously named B.C.'s Most Active Community in 2022 and was recognized again in 2024 for promoting healthy living and physical activity.

The ParticipACTION Community Challenge is a nationwide physical activity initiative encouraging Canadians to get active every June.

Richmond was recognized for its activity levels and the creative ways the city and its community partners motivated residents to get moving.

Around 425,050 participants registered in more than 1,010 activities ranging from individual sessions to team sports in Richmond this past June, according to the City of Richmond.

There were numerous free and low-cost events and programs such as Walk Richmond guided walks, Go by Bike Week, "try-it" fitness sessions and more.

Almost 60 Richmond organizations also registered for the community challenge, with the city saying this is a 75 per cent increase from last year.

“This is a tremendous honour that recognizes Richmond’s commitment to being a vibrant, active community,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“The city is proud to support physical activity and well-being, and provide a variety of safe, fun and inclusive opportunities for all ages to keep people connected and promote healthy lifestyles. On behalf of the many organizations and individuals that support physical activity and well-being in Richmond, we are honoured to be named Canada’s Most Active Community.”

Richmond is a certified Global Activity City under the international Active Well-being Initiative and has been an active participant in the ParticipACTION Community Challenge since 2019.

This challenge is presented by Novo Nordisk with funding by the Government of Canada and Novo Nordisk.
