New West residents are invited to apply for two air-conditioning programs offered by BC Hydro.

The provincial government recently announced it would be providing $10 million to BC Hydro so it could expand its Energy Conservation Assistance Program to include free, publicly funded portable air conditioners. The goal is to provide more assistance to people who are the most vulnerable during extreme heat emergencies.

While New Westminster is served by the city’s electrical utility, local residents who meet the required income qualifications are able to apply for a BC Hydro program that’s providing free air-conditioning units.

Customers in single-family homes, apartments and condos can get more details and apply for the free air conditioner program at https://tinyurl.com/BCHydroFreeAC.

Because of the province’s investment, B.C. Hydro expects to install 8,000 air-conditioning units over the next three years.

“Many people in B.C. struggle with extreme heat and often have limited options available when it comes to cooling,” Chris O’Riley, president and CEO of BC Hydro, said in a news release. “We are committed to providing assistance through new funding for free air-conditioning units for vulnerable and low-income customers, as well as a new rebate offer for all residential customers.”

A second program being offered by BC Hydro is providing rebates for people purchasing portable or window air conditioners. The deadline to apply to get a $50 rebate for select energy-efficient portable or window air conditioners is July 28

“We offer rebates seasonally for products that improve the energy efficiency and comfort of your home,” said a notice from BC Hydro. “Take advantage of the deals while they’re here to start seeing savings on your electricity bill.”

Customers who purchase eligible air conditioners from June 2 to July 28 have two ways to get the rebate – via an instant in-store discount (at Costco, Best Buy and Home Depot stores) or as a rebate on their BC Hydro bill (which applies to retailers not providing the in-store discount).

Details about the rebate program are found at https://tinyurl.com/BCHydroACRebate.

“New Westminster residents are eligible to apply to these and all other BC Hydro programs,” said a notice on the city’s website.
