Fowl play? The mystery of a missing duck has Vancouver birders concerned

The white mallard allegedly disappeared from Queen Elizabeth Park.

A suspected ab-duck-tion has taken place at Queen Elizabeth Park and a group of enterprising locals is trying to get to the bottom of it.

A resident white mallard that frequents the Queen Elizabeth Park duck pond hasn't been spotted for several days allegedly following an attempted duck-napping on Dec.15.

A post shared on social media describes how a woman attempted to lure the white duck into a car before being told by a stranger to stop.

"A park worker drove by, the lady told him what was happening and the potential ducknapper jumped in her car and sped off," reads the post.

The woman allegedly circled the block several times in the space of 30 minutes watching the duck. The original Reddit poster says they reported the incident to 311 and recorded the licence plate but the story doesn't end there.

The fowl incident had locals on guard, keeping an eye out for the duck after its disappearance.

"I live near Queen Elizabeth Park and frequently walk my dog there," Matt Taggart tells V.I.A in an email.

"After reading [the Reddit post] describing a woman attempting to steal the famous white duck in 'The Duck Pond' I made sure to check for the duck every time I walked by. After visiting family out of town over the holidays, I went to the park today for the first time in over a week.

"To my shock, the duck was actually gone."

Taggart sounded the alarm on Reddit again, remarking that the duck was missing and locals are concerned that it was stolen. He has a photo of the duck taken on Dec.16 but says he has not seen it since.

V.I.A reached out to VPD and the City of Vancouver but neither have any knowledge of the duck or its attempted duck-napping.

A spokesperson for the city told V.I.A. that they have "spoken to the Superintendent of Queen Elizabeth Park and she has canvassed the staff about the duck, and they can confidently say, they know nothing about a stolen duck."
