With Christmas approaching the BC SPCA is working to make sure pets in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside don't get missed.

"The BC SPCA is seeking donations of new pet toys and treats for Charlie’s pet food bank to help make the holidays merrier for animals of low-income guardians in the Downtown Eastside," they write in a press release.

They're holding a toy drive from now to Dec. 22 so they can distribute items to the area's furry friends.

Charlie's pet food bank has been helping people in the community care for their pets for more than 20 years.

"The people we support love and care for their pets and want to make the holidays special for them, but because they are living with very little disposable income, they need a little help to do that,” says BC SPCA outreach specialist Diane Waters.

Like other pet owners, the people the BC SPCA are helping want to keep their companion happy and healthy, but it's not always financially possible, she says.

To donate to the pet food bank, people can make a financial donation or drop off new pet toys at the Vancouver BC SPCA branch at 1205 East 7 Ave near VCC-Clark station.

On Dec. 23 the gifts and treats will be packed and distributed to people and the pets at Charlie's food bank on Powell Street.
