The Greater Vancouver Roller Derby Association is hosting its season-opener game at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster, this upcoming Sunday, April 30.

It’s all about skills, spills and thrills at the region's roller derby season opener.

If you’re looking for something unique and thrilling to do, then the place to be this upcoming Sunday, April 30, is the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster, at 75 E. Sixth Ave.

The Greater Vancouver Roller Derby Association (GVRDA) will be hosting two games. The first game is for those who attended GVRDA roller derby program that teaches people how to play and skate.

GVRDA marketing director Melissa Trickett, said the latest rookie program just ended, and this game, known as scrimmage, was organized as a learning opportunity.

“This will be their first opportunity to play in a game scenario and also the first opportunity for them to have friends and family come watch them,” she said. “So, we call it a scrimmage that'll be supplemented with some veteran skaters to help them.”

The second game of the day, which is part of their season opener, will be against Chilliwack’s NWO Roller Derby Association. Like the scrimmage, it will be a demonstration for the public and doesn’t count for ranking.

“People that play want to be able to play games and participate in that way,” she said.

Trickett described the event as the perfect opportunity for those who aren’t aware of the roller derby world.

“If people are ever curious about it, I think they should just come,” Trickett said. “Come try it. Come watch it.... It's definitely a really fun experience.”
