Friday expected to be busiest at YVR for New Year’s long weekend

More than 70,000 passengers are forecasted to go through the airport on Dec. 29.

Friday, Dec. 29, is expected to be the busiest day at YVR this New Year’s long weekend.

Vancouver International Airport's (YVR) busiest travel season is expected to continue this weekend leading up to the new year.

According to YVR data, the airport expects an average of around 67,516 passengers per day between Dec. 28 and Jan. 2.

The busiest day will be on Friday, where more than 72,561 passengers will be travelling, and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 will see 67,110 and 65,246 passengers respectively.

Peak times for check-in and security for domestic flights are 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m., while U.S. flights will be the busiest from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by 10 a.m. to noon.

For international travels, the peak period for going through check-in and security will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A total of more than 405,000 passengers are expected to go through the airport over the six-day period, which is 94 per cent of pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels back in 2019.
