A Coquitlam driver blew through this B.C. Highway Patrol speed warning sign on Highway 1 through Surrey at 134 km/h.

A young B.C. driver who sped at 134 km/h beneath a highway sign warning of patrols found himself with $673 in fines after the officer beneath the sign pulled him over.

“Sometimes life gives you a sign,” B.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said. “Make an effort to slow down and enjoy the drive. You might avoid getting ticketed and towed.”

McLaughlin said the driver was on his cellphone at the time and has had his vehicle impounded.

He said the westbound white Mercedes sedan was stopped on Highway 1 through Surrey after an officer clocked the car at 134 km/h in a 100 zone on June 28 at 4:30 p.m.

The officer was parked under a sign saying “BC Hwy Patrol Ahead. Drive Safe.”

Police allege the 19-year-old Coquitlam man didn’t see the warning sign, or the cop, because he was using his phone while speeding, McLaughlin said. The driver was already subject to a driving prohibition.

He was issued:

• a $196 fine for speeding against a highway sign;

• a $109 fine for a defective motor vehicle;

• a $368 fine for using an electronic device while driving;

• a seven-day vehicle impound; and,

• a summons for a future court date.
