Surrey Mounties rescued an elderly couple after crashing into backyard pool on Dec. 15, 2021.

An elderly couple was heroically rescued by police in Surrey Wednesday afternoon, after they lost control of their vehicle, smashed through a home’s fence and landed in a backyard pool.

Surrey RCMP reported the incident to media Thursday.

“We’re also incredibly thankful for the citizens who immediately called for emergency services and provided invaluable assistance to police and first responders,” said Sgt. Brad Essex in a statement.

The Guildford-area homeowners in the 16500 block of Glenwood Crescent South heard the commotion and immediately called 911, said Surrey RCMP spokesperson Sarbjit Sangha.

When the vehicle landed in the pool, the couple appeared trapped.

Const. Gonpo, who first arrived within a couple of minutes of the call, is being hailed as the hero after he jumped in the pool to assist the two occupants. Gonpo managed to open the door of the vehicle and remove the couple from the swimming pool.

The couple was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, but thankfully have no obvious injuries, said Sangha.
