You can share your talents and get to know your neighbours at a series of open mic nights in New West.
100 Braid Street Studios is hosting regular open mic nights for both spoken word and music.
The spoken word open mic nights, a new venture for 2020, kick off on Jan. 20 and will run on the third Monday of every month from 7 to 10 p.m.
Poets, actors, authors and storytellers of all ages are invited to share their work for up to eight minutes. Performance content must be suitable for all ages.
There’s a concession available, and admission is pay what you can, with a suggested donation of $5.
The musical open mic nights are on the first Monday of every month, running from 7 to 10 p.m. The next one is coming up Feb. 3.
Musical performers of all kinds are invited to share their talents, either solo or as a group. There’s no size limit to the performance as long as you can fit within your eight-minute time limit (so no big set-ups or take-downs). Performers of all ages are welcome, and youth are encouraged to take part.
There’s an electric keyboard and sound mixing board on hand; bring anything else you need.
For audience members, there’s a concession available, and admission is pay what you can, with a suggested donation of $10.
For both the musical and spoken word nights, each evening has 10 eight-minute slots up for grabs, and the sign-up list opens at 7 p.m. A featured artist kicks off at 7:20, with the open mic slots starting at 7:30 p.m.; the featured artist closes the night again at 9:20 p.m. A waiting list is started for performers with pieces under five minutes to fill any gaps if the night runs ahead of a time.
