Two New Westminster actors are set to take to the stage in a new production of an American theatre classic.

Peninsula Productions is staging Thornton Wilder’s Our Town from Aug. 9 to 24 at Peninsula’s new black-box studio theatre in Centennial Park, White Rock.

New Westminster’s Hailey Conner stars as Emily Webb, while fellow New Westminster resident Colleen Byberg joins her as Mrs. Gibbs.

Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama tells the story of the fictional small town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens.

“It starts with an empty stage, and the character of the Stage Manager welcoming us and introducing us to the town. A few chairs, a couple of ladders and eight very talented actors, each playing a number of roles, bring this story to life – it’s pretty magical,” said director Rebecca Walters in a press release.

“It’s such a wonderful script. It’s funny, and clever, and incredibly moving. The story seems really simple, but then it sneaks up on you, and you realize that that’s what life is, a string of small moments, some beautiful, some sad, some overwhelmingly powerful, but mostly simple, and then you get to the end and realize ‘Oh! That’s my life!’”

The cast also includes Ryan Kniel, Damion LeClair, Michelle Morris, David Underhill, Katie Voravong and Elliot Wesley.

The theatre is at 14600 North Bluff Rd. in White Rock. Our Town is onstage from Friday, Aug. 9 to Saturday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m., with shows Wednesdays through Saturday evenings, plus 2:30 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. There’s also a preview night on Thursday, Aug. 8.
