A couple of musical theatre performers from New Westminster will get to spend more time onstage this summer, thanks to an extended run at Theatre Under the Stars.

TUTS has just announced an extension to this summer’s run due to “overwhelming demand.” Its productions of Mamma Mia! and Disney’s Newsies will now run an extra week, up until Aug. 24.

Both shows feature New Westminster talent.

Keira Jang – widely known in New West for her star turn in the NWSS production of Legally Blonde in 2017 – stars as Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia!, while Caleb Lagayan is featured in Newsies.

“We are profoundly grateful for the inspiring support shown by our long-term, loyal fans and first-time attendees to this season’s critically acclaimed productions of Mamma Mia! and Disney’s Newsies,” said TUTS board president Naveen Kapahi in a press release. “It is with great pleasure that we are extending this highly successful season, which is on track to surpass all TUTS records. … We are thrilled to add seven performances, providing seven more opportunities for our patrons to enjoy this cherished summer tradition.”

Starring along with Jang in Mamma Mia! are Caitriona Murphy as Donna Sheridan, with Sheryl Anne Wheaton as Rosie and Lori Ashton Zondag as Tanya. Stefan Winfield, Matt Ramer and Peter Monaghan appear as the trio of Sophie’s possible dads.

Newsies, meanwhile, stars Adam Charles as Jack Kelly, with Daniel Curalli as Davey Jacobs and Jordyn Bennett as Les Jacobs.

Both shows have another New Westminster connection – Christina Sinosich, the costume designer, who’s well known locally for her work with Royal City Musical Theatre and Royal City Youth Ballet, among others.

Tickets range from $30 to $55. Shows are on alternating nights at 8 p.m. (except fireworks evenings, when shows begin at 7 p.m.) at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. For tickets, see www.tuts.ca or call 604-631-2877.
