The film offers a glimpse into the lives of people on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. It traces the lives of two middle-aged couples over a period of five years. All of them began using injection drugs – such as heroin and cocaine – early in their lives and, remarkably, survived all this time.

The film is interspersed with Gasztonyi’s black-and-white images of the Downtown Eastside.

“The film reveals an honesty of emotion and candidness rarely seen in documentary films which seek to portray the life of the addict,” says a write-up about the event.

Gasztonyi served as writer, director and cinematographer for the film, which he co-produced with Daryl Bennett – who served as editor, composer and sound director.

The documentary has earned international recognition for Gasztonyi and Bennett, including an award for Best Cinematography at the 2019 Harlem International Film Festival.

It also earned nominations at the International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema in London in 2018, for Best Feature Documentary, Best Director and Best Editing, and it also earned a nomination for a Scientific and Educational Award. It won Best Editing for a Feature Documentary.

Bennett also earned a 2018 Leo Award nomination for Best Sound for his work on the film.
