Art lovers in New Westminster can check out the latest exhibition at Plaskett Gallery throughout the month of July.

Raven’s Eye 2020, featuring work by Kevin Stewart, is on at the gallery at Massey Theatre until July 31.

Visitors can book a chance to see the exhibition as part of the gallery’s Art While Apart programming – people can book appointments with their own “bubble” and enjoy 30 minutes at the gallery.

Stewart, in an artist’s statement, notes that his artistic approach was honed in childhood. He remembers being six years old, in Grade 1, colouring in stencilled pictures for Mother’s Day.

“I didn’t know we were supposed to only colour in the lines. I was more concerned about the colours I was putting into and around the image. The brighter the better,” he said. “I wanted to impress my mother and move her with my abundance of colour everywhere, like fireworks! Colour was motion! My teacher was horrified and reamed me out for not colouring in the lines.”

Stewart notes that the Raven’s Eye exhibition is a group of paintings representing his perspectives over the past two years.

“A recurring theme in my work seems to be a desire to express an experience that has transformed me, a beauty that I try to recreate for the viewer, a story that sets a mood in the room,” he said. “The raven is a recurring symbol in my work representing how I see myself as an artist. Raven’s eye, the eye of the artist, has a unique perspective that allows for transformation to occur.”

Anyone who visits the gallery will be asked to state that they’ve assessed themselves for COVID-19 symptoms before entering, and visitors will be required to provide contact information should contact tracing be necessary in the future.

The gallery is at 735 Eighth Ave., open Tuesday to Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. You can book a visit by calling the box office at 604-521-5050 or online. (Call if you want to visit outside the appointment hours.)
