New Westminster vaccination rates heading for the 90% mark

First-dose vaccination rates now at 88% for those 50+ and 86% for 12+ in New West

You can walk in to the Anvil Centre in downtown New West for your first COVID-19 vaccine dose, or for a second dose if you received your first before June 16.

Will today's provincewide "Walk-In Wednesday" be enough to push New Westminster's vaccination rates into A+ territory?

The first-dose vaccination rate for New West residents aged 50 and up is sitting at 88% as of Aug. 3, according to new B.C. Centre for Disease Control data. That puts New West in a tie with South Surrey/White Rock for third spot in the Fraser Health region – behind Surrey's 90% and Delta's 92%.

Amongst residents aged 12+ and 18+, the first-dose rate in New West is at 86%.

The BCCDC has also published second-dose rates by local health area, and New Westminster's numbers are high across the board: 73% for those aged 12+, 75% for 18+, and 81% for the 50+ crowd.

The province is hoping to push vaccination numbers up by declaring today (Aug. 4) Walk-In Wednesday around B.C. That means anyone in search of a shot can walk in to any clinic, without an appointment, and get one today. The shots are available for anyone aged 12+ in search of a first dose, and anyone in search of a second dose who received their first dose before June 16.

You don't need to register online or by phone; just head to your nearest clinic. In New Westminster, that means the Anvil Centre (at 777 Columbia St.), where walk-ins are available between 10:45 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Anvil Centre clinic is in its final few days of operation; Fraser Health has announced the closure of many of the mass immunization clinics across the region, including New Westminster's. The Anvil clinic's final day is Saturday, Aug. 7.
