New West middle school notified of COVID-19 exposures from first week of March

No break from COVID notifications on spring break

School may not in session in New West - but that hasn't stopped exposures from before spring break from being reported.

Folks at Fraser River Middle School have been alerted to the possibility of COVID-19 exposures in the first week of March.

A March 16 update on the Fraser Health website states exposure events at Fraser River Middle School occurred on March 2, 3, 4 and 5. That comes on the heels of the yesterday’s update, which reported exposures at Ecole Qayqayt Elementary, New Westminster Secondary and Queen Elizabeth Elementary – all of which were on March 8 and 9.

Other exposures at local public schools in March include March 3 and 4 exposures at Lord Kelvin Elementary and a March 1 exposure at Richard McBride Elementary.

The New Westminster school district is on spring break from March 15 to 26, but notifications about any exposures that may have occurred leading up to the break are still being sent to school communities. They’re also being posted on the Fraser Health website.

At last week’s school board meeting, superintendant Karim Hachlaf said it’s hoped COVID-19 exposures will start to decline.

“Fingers crossed as we head into the break and warmer weather,” he said. “We are optimistic that after the break we can certainly hopefully see decreased numbers with transmission, and we’ll monitor that closely.”

Across the border in Burnaby, St. Thomas More Collegiate has been informed of a March 11 exposure. Like the public schools in New Westminster, STM is on spring break from March 15 to 26.
