More COVID-19 exposures at NWSS, Urban Academy in New West

Eight of School District 40's 12 schools have seen COVID-19 exposures in 2021/22
New NWSS 2021
New Westminster Secondary School has been added to the COVID-19 exposures list for a case or cases on Oct. 13, 15, 18, 19 and 20.

New Westminster Secondary School and the independent Urban Academy are back on the COVID-19 exposures list.

Both schools have seen recent COVID-19 exposures, according to the Fraser Health school exposures website. Two recent postings were added for New Westminster Secondary School: one for Oct. 15 and 18, the other for Oct. 13, 19 and 20.

Because the site lists exposures only by date, it is not clear whether those are two separate cases or whether more dates were added to the initial exposure. There may also be more than two exposures involved; at least one of those dates (Oct. 18) saw a separate self-monitoring letter issued on Oct. 22, as confirmed in the B.C. School COVID Tracker database.

Urban Academy also saw another exposure Oct. 18 and 19.

An "exposure" means that someone who has since tested positive for COVID-19 was in the school during their potentially infectious period on the date or dates in question, and that other people may be at risk of having come in contact with the virus. Health officials do not publish the number of cases involved, so it's not known whether the dates involve one person or multiple cases. The public information also does not list whether cases involve staff or students, or both.

So far in the 2021/21 school year, eight of the New Westminster school district's 12 schools have seen exposures.
