Another long-term care home in New Westminster has an active COVID-19 outbreak.

An outbreak has been declared at Buchanan Lodge, Fraser Health announced in a press release on Jan. 18. When the outbreak was announced, seven residents and four staff members were affected at the Sapperton care home. All residents and staff members were in self-isolation at their homes, the release said.

As of the weekly B.C. Centre for Disease Control report published Jan. 20, the case count stood at six: three residents and three staff.

Fraser Health said it had worked with all the centre to support "enhanced control measures."

It cited measures including:

  • supporting staffing levels to maintain resident care;
  • restricting social visits in affected areas (essential visits can continue);
  • modifying staff and resident movement in affected areas to minimize exposure to others;
  • enhancing cleaning and infection control;
  • notifying residents, families and staff;
  • screening all staff and residents twice a day; and
  • adding testing and screening to support monitoring of disease control.

An outbreak at Kiwanis Care Centre, where 42 cases had been identified, was declared over on Jan. 19.
