COVID-19: 87% of New Westminster residents are now fully vaccinated

New West's upward climb is slowing, however, and the 90% benchmark – which has been reached by nine local health areas in B.C. – remains elusive
COVID vaccination
87% of eligible New West residents (aged 12+) have now received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to BCCDC data.

One percentage point up from last week, 13 percentage points to go.

As of Oct. 19, 87% of eligible New Westminster residents (aged 12+) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest B.C. Centre for Disease Control data.

The 90% benchmark remains elusive – and it's likely to be so for some time yet, since New West's numbers are now creeping up very slowly. Last week's fully vaccinated rate stood at 86%, where it had stayed for two weeks.

First-dose vaccination rates for all age groups plateaued over the past week, with the 12-to-17 age group still at 89%, the 18-to-49 age group still at 93% and the 50+ age group still at 91%.

Second-dose numbers, however, are climbing incrementally. The second-dose rate for youth (12 to 17) is now 82%, up from 81% last week. For younger adults (18 to 49), it's now 87%, up from 86% last week. The vaccination rate for older adults (aged 50+) stayed at 88%.

New Westminster remains among the most-vaccinated areas in B.C., with just 11 of B.C.'s 87 local health areas having higher rates of full vaccination among their eligible populations. New Westminster is now in a tie for that 12th spot with Burnaby, Richmond and Kitimat – the latter being the first Northern Health area to break into the province's top spots.
