New Westminster's case counts are continuing to climb, with 31 new cases in the latest BCCDC weekly data.

New Westminster’s COVID-19 case counts are continuing to climb – but, fortunately, not as fast as in the previous two weeks.

The latest B.C. Centre for Disease Control numbers show New Westminster’s case count at 31 new cases for the week of Aug. 8 to 14.

The new data brings a halt to a pattern of quintupling that had happened since New West hit a record-low single new case four weeks ago. That one case was followed by a week with five new cases, which was then followed by 26 the week after.

Other data indicators in New West are also continuing to climb, albeit slowly.

The city’s case rate for the week of Aug. 10 to 16 stood at 6 cases per 100,000 population, up from 5 per 100,000 the previous week. Prior to that, the case rate stood at 1 per 100,000 population.

Test positivity has also gone up to 6% for publicly funded tests, up from 5% last week.

The New Westminster numbers come against a backdrop of continued concern provincewide, as B.C. hit a three-month peak of 717 cases on Friday, Aug. 13. Since then, provincial numbers have hovered at around 500 new cases a day, with 553 reported today.
