The City of New Westminster will hire a consultant to help it develop and implement a framework that advances diversity, inclusion and equity across the civic organization. Diversity and inclusion is also something being pursued by the New Westminster Police Department.

You’re invited to join local residents for a picnic on the lawn of New Westminster City Hall while watching the council meeting on a big screen.

A group of citizens is hosting an informal social gathering while viewing the July 8 council meeting on the front lawn of city hall. People are encouraged to bring their own picnic and blankets to the event, which begins at 6 p.m. and runs until the meeting ends.

“This event gives New Westminster residents an informal way to gather and discuss the council meeting while it’s occurring,” said a press release from organizers. “The goal of this event is to make the formal processes that occur in council meetings more accessible to people who may not feel comfortable sitting in council chambers. It’s also a family-friendly way to allow children to experience government in action.”

Monday’s council meeting will be broadcast on a six-foot projection screen.

The agenda for the meeting, which begins at 6 p.m., will be released Friday.

“July 8 is an open delegation night. This means that residents can talk directly to council about issues they think the city needs to pay attention to,” said a press release. “Anyone wishing to delegate must do so from the council chamber, and will need to sign up in city hall itself.”

Organizers want citizens to know that accessible washrooms are located inside city hall, and that the front lawn of city hall isn’t level as it slopes down toward Royal Avenue.

The July 8 council meeting is the final meeting before council breaks for summer. Council’s next meeting is Monday, Aug. 26.

New Westminster City Hall is located at 511 Royal Ave.
