Tugboats will help kick off a new online series of programs being offered by Fraser River Discovery Centre.

Super Saturdays returns to Fraser River Discovery Centre this weekend with a focus on tugboats.

Super Saturdays is a series of public programs at Fraser River Discovery Centre that celebrate the living, working Fraser River. On the last Saturday of each month, the centre will provide family-friendly activities focused on a different Fraser River topic.

The theme of this weekend’s Super Saturday is one of the river’s most popular features – the mighty tugboat.

“Everybody has seen tugboats cruising up and down the Fraser,” said Stephen Bruyneel, director of external relations and development at Fraser River Discovery Centre. “These plucky crafts guide larger vessels safely into dock and pull barges of goods upriver. They’re very important, and we’d like to tell you all about them on Jan. 25 at our next Super Saturday.”

Visitors to Fraser River Discovery Centre will be able to find out about all the important jobs tugboats do on the river. People of all ages can learn fun facts – like the fact tugboats can tow up to 100 times their own weight – and get a chance to make their own origami boats.

“There will be fun for the whole family, so come on down and join us,” Bruyneel said in a press release.

This month’s Super Saturday is on Jan. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 788 Quayside Dr.

Admission to Super Saturdays is included with admission to Discovery Centre’s galleries, and there’s no need to sign up in advance. For more information, go to fraserriverdiscovery.org.
