The sound of brushes scraping on granite, and the occasional good-natured greeting from one young person to another broke the usual silence in the New Westminster cemetery Sunday. Young people joined members of the New Westminster-based Society of the Officers of the Honourable Guard to clean the graves and headstones of military veterans at Fraser Cemetery. The society has been organizing the grave cleanings for five years, each year inviting students and local community groups to join them. It’s part of a goal to teach children about the people who fought in world wars overseas, according to Rob Rathbun, a member of the Honourable Guard Society. Photos by Lisa King
