Lorrie Williams, Angela Kerslake and Leona Green, from left, will once again be spending their Christmas vacation helping out at an Animal Aware Guatemala shelter for animals.

A trio of local women are preparing to return to Guatemala for a bit of fun and charitable works over the holidays.

Angela Kerslake, a New Westminster-based lawyer, is a longtime supporter of the Animal Aware Guatemala shelter. In recent years, local residents Leona Green and Lorrie Williams have joined Kerslake in Guatemala for Christmas, where they volunteer at the shelter.

Before their Dec. 21 departure for Guatemala, Green is once again raising money to buy food for the animals in the shelter. Donations can be made at Greens and Beans Deli at 143 East Columbia St.

“Last year I was able to buy the shelter 181 bags of food and will try to beat that this year,” Green said. “The food is $28 a bag.”

Green buys the food from a wholesaler in Guatemala. Donations collected in 2017 allowed her to buy 177 bags of food – enough to feed animals in the shelter for two months.
