New West tree sale generates lots of interest

What's happening Around Town

Local residents still have time to help grow the tree canopy in New West.

As part of its goal of reaching a 27%-canopy coverage within the city, the City of New Westminster is holding an inaugural tree sale. The city is making several species of trees available for residents to purchase at a reduced coast – just $10.

Erika Mashig, the city’s manager of arboriculture, horticulture, parks and open space planning, said the city has had an awesome response to the sale. As of Feb. 21, the city had sold about 100 trees and ordered additional trees to accommodate more sales.

Residents can purchase a maximum of two trees per household (or apartment), and must pick them up on Saturday, March 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Queensborough Community Centre parking lot. Unclaimed trees will be sold (cash only) from 11 a.m. to noon.
