New West ravine enhancement event needs volunteers

A community initiative to enhance Glenbrook Ravine is adopting some new protocols in response to COVID-19.

Community members are invited to take part in a Glenbrook Ravine invasive species removal event taking place on Saturday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, which will be held rain or shine, can have a maximum of 50 volunteers, so people must let organizers know if they’re planning to attend.

“We will be back in the ravine again, continuing to build on the great turnout we had at the end of May,” organizer Kyle Routledge said in a notice about the event. “We really are getting there!”

Volunteers must wear appropriate footwear (something with ankle support and closed toes) and bring sunscreen, a hat and a long-sleeve shirt. Because of COVID-19, organizers are unable to offer some items that have been provided to volunteers in the past, so people are advised to bring their own water bottle filled with water, their own snacks, their own pen (to sign a waiver if they haven’t already done so), their own work gloves (if they have them) and their own tools if possible (but organizers will have ways of sanitizing tools on-site.)

“COVID-19 requirements will include new check-in protocols (as we sign people in with appropriate physical distancing), so a bit of a slower start may be expected,” Routledge said. “Dedicated city staff and group leaders will be onsite to ensure physical distancing is adhered to throughout the day.”

Anyone planning to attend can RSVP to and let him know how many people will be in your party.

“We anticipate many people will be eager to get back outside, and while more than 50 people would normally be a wonderful turnout, we want to make sure we can manage everything properly to ensure these events can continue to occur throughout the summer,” he said.

Everyone is required to sign a waiver, which will be available on-site day and will be valid throughout 2020. Anyone under the age of 18 will also need permission from a parent.
