A local residence that’s provided housing to hundreds of seniors is celebrating a milestone.

Connaught Heights Villa is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an on-site barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 25. Jonas Jonsson, chair of the Villa board, invites all present and past residents and administrators to drop by the barbecue from 2 to 4 p.m.

“Fifty years ago, there were no low-income apartments for seniors,” said a press release from Connaught Heights Villa. “The Connaught Heights Villa was sponsored by the Connaught Heights Pentecostal Church, and built under the auspices of the B.C. Government and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, as a non-profit, low-income seniors’ building.”

While it’s proud of its past, the villa is looking forward to helping people feel safe and comfortable for many more years.

Located at 2222 Edinburgh St., Connaught Heights Villa provides housing to seniors aged 55 and older.

“Our Villa welcomes independent, responsible seniors who appreciate a friendly, Christian environment. Once here, our residents stay for years. We have very few vacancies,” said the press release. “Rents are kept at a much lower level than the norm, so seniors have an easier time with their limited budgets. The Villa is located at the west end of New Westminster, but it is near bus and SkyTrain transportation.”
