John Horgan goes green (and red) in New West

What's happening Around Town

NDP leader John Horgan showed his true colours when visiting the Royal City last night.

Horgan joined a contingent of local New Democrats, including MLA-elect Judy Darcy, former MLA and MP Dawn Black and her husband Peter, a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, at the June 1 game between the New Westminster Salmonbellies and the Victoria Shamrocks. An ardent Shamrocks fan, Horgan, a Victoria native, did the ceremonial faceoff wearing a Bellies’ jersey, but was sporting a green Shamrocks jersey partway through the second period.

Following the game, Horgan told the Record he played lacrosse when he was a teen, before heading east for school. He was thrilled to get an autographed lacrosse ball at Thursday’s game from New West resident and Canadian lacrosse legend Wayne Goss, telling the Record Goss was his lacrosse hero growing up.

When Horgan wasn’t watching his hometown team beat the Bellies five to four, the future premier was game to pose for photos with local lacrosse fans.
